A Slice in Time – A celebration of Dance in Singapore through the photographer’s lens
An exhibition of dance photography by Robin Chee, Matthew Johnson, Bernie Ng and Tan Ngiap Heng
Venue: The Stamford Arts Centre
Dates: 7-23 October 2016
Dance, the ephemeral art form, arguably only meaningful in the passage of time. And yet, photographers undertake the impossible task, to capture the essence of dance, in a still image.
The professional dance scene in Singapore is relatively young, but has been burgeoning recently with the rest of the performing arts scene. And yet in this short span of time the collaboration between dancers and photographers has been prolific, from taking photographs from stage performances to creative dance photography as art, there has been a lot of activity going on.
The four photographers in A Slice in Time have worked with most of the major dance companies in Singapore and across the spectrum of dance in Singapore. The exhibition presents the scope of dance and dance photography in Singapore and also the depth of the photography in Singapore. It is about a group of photographers who have attempted the impossible, capturing the essence of movement into a still image.
This exhibition will feature the performance photographs of Robin Chee and Bernie Ng, and the photographic collaborations with dancers of Matthew Johnson and Tan Ngiap Heng. The exhibition will have approximately one hundred images focussing on local dance productions and prominent visiting dance companies. There will also be a selection of behind the scenes photographs showing what goes on behind the scenes in dance companies and at dance shoots. The performance photographs will show the diversity of dance that is happening in Singapore today. The photographic collaborations will highlight the artistic possibilities of collaborations between dancers and photographers.
The exhibition will be part of the Got to Move festival 2016 and will be held at Stamford Arts Centre. The exhibition will make creative use of the spaces vacated by various arts groups that have move out of Stamford arts Centre. To enhance the exhibition and to promote the appreciation of dance there will be various components to the exhibition.
