My inspiration comes from personal experiences, from the joy of dance to mundane family life. My art, which started with photography but has diversified to different mediums, endeavors to illicit the audience’s conscious engagement through various means that expound on the themes contained within.Tan Ngiap Heng

Photovoice SG

2012

In 2012, Photovoice SG was born by a desire to bring participatory photography
projects to Singapore. The project was lead by Jennifer Koh, and Jasmine Seah
was the treasurer. Koh Yeeling and I were working photographers and helped to
conceptualize and administer the projects. The main idea was to find mentors and
facilitators to help groups of people who may not be so visible in society to tell their
own stories through photography projects.

In our first year we worked with youth on the autistic spectrum, children of ex-
inmates, young adults who have experienced or are at risk of physchosis,
and persons living with HIV.Photovoice SG engaged with
organizations who wanted to run such workshops. We then found voulunteer
photography mentors and facilitators who could help run the workshops. The
workshops ran from eight to ten weeks and finished with a publice exhibition of
the photographs taken by the participants.

Photovoice SG lasted for about two years plus. Unfortunately we were unable to find
a way to turn Photovoice SG into a self sustaining non profit organization.
